West Side Solidarity Action Inc. (“WSSA”) aims at providing urgent support to the individuals in need while taking action to lessen the impact on business and social infrastructure.

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemics our NYC communities are facing several urgent and long- term threats:

1. Countless people are or will become isolated in their homes: the elderly,
immunocompromised and quarantined families in particular.

2. The rapid spread of food shortages and other insecurity is overwhelming existing systems with the isolated and underprivileged facing the clearest and most imminent danger.

3. Essential businesses are laying off employees and running the risk of shutting down completely in the immediate future. The food industry, including local restauranteurs and caterers, is a clear example.

4. The rapid destruction of business and social fabric could generate a local post-COVID economy that has not only lost stock market paper value, but also the human capital to rebuild at a reasonably fast pace.

West Side Solidarity Action Inc. (“WSSA”) aims at providing urgent support to the individuals in need while taking action to lessen the impact on business and social infrastructure.

We started with a local grassroots initiative by a small neighborhood synagogue and its caterer who committed to and have already delivered hundreds of kosher meals to the isolated. Our purpose is to make it possible to maintain and expand this initiative.

In addition, WSSA’s urgent mandate will include delivery of a “Seder in a box” for Passover and, as the needs arise, the delivery of other essentials to the isolated and most vulnerable.

We also aim to reach out across community lines to expand upon this model and to create support and shelter the community at large to whatever degree we can. This is a mandate rooted in Jewish tradition going back to Moses, who immediately climbed back to Sinai to get a second set of Tablets after the first were shattered. We are taught to rebuild that which is broken with
the utmost energy. We hope to put in place systems that will survive this epidemic and be able to continue to address currently unmet needs in our community.

Our hope is to transcend this crisis to ignite others to follow suit. In the prescient words of Dr. Martin Luther King:

“Through our scientific and technological genius we’ve made of this world a neighborhood. And now through our moral and ethical commitment we must make of it a brotherhood. We must all learn to live together as brothers—or we will all perish together as fools.”

WSSA is a not-for-profit association (501c3) run by volunteers, exclusively. Donations can be made in the name of WSSA.
